The Sreevallabha temple gave Thiruvalla its name and is still the heart of the town. Mahavishnu is worshipped here as Sreevallabhan, the beloved of Sree (Lakshmi), facing east; in the same sanctum, facing west, stands Sudarshanamoorthy, the Lord's discus in divine form. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams sung by the Alvar poets Nammalvar and Thirumangai Alvar.
Two things make a visit here special. Kathakali is staged in the temple as an offering to the Lord – a tradition kept up for generations – and a tall black-granite Garuda pillar, topped by a figure of Garuda facing the shrine, rises in front of the temple. The temple is spread over a large walled compound with a gopuram on each side.
The temple's best-known legend is about Sreedevi Antharjanam, a pious widow who kept the Ekadasi fast faithfully, counting the days with pebbles because she could not read the calendar. She fed a Brahmin student each day to complete her vow. When the demon Thukalasura began to trouble the place, then called Mallikavanam, the Lord is said to have appeared as a young brahmachari and slain him with a weapon that became the Sudarshana chakra. Another story tells of Khandakarnan, a fierce devotee of Shiva who was sent to Vishnu and found release here after bathing in the temple tank.
Devotees also believe that the sage Durvasa and the Saptarishis come to worship at Thiruvalla every night. A popular tradition links the idol to the Chera king Cheraman Perumal and his queen, and the building of the temple to the master craftsman Perunthachan.
In recorded history, Thiruvalla was one of the old Brahmin settlements of Kerala and an important centre of Vedic learning. The Thiruvalla copper plates found in the temple, from about the 12th century, are among the earliest prose records in Malayalam and describe the temple's lands and endowments. The temple came under Travancore in the 1750s and is now administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board. For a long time women were not allowed into the inner temple except on a few days a year; this restriction was lifted in 1968.
